What is a Primary Care Physician?

As defined by the American Academy of Family Physicians, a Primary Care Physician is a specialist in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics who provides comprehensive care to a patient whether the care be chronic, preventative or acute.  A primary care practice provides the following:

  • Health promotion

  • Disease prevention

  • Health maintenance

  • Counseling

  • Patient education

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses

  • Blood pressure check.

  • Blood test.

  • Clinical breast exam.

  • Urine analysis.

  • Weight recorded.

  • Medication review.

  • Reproductive health including minor surgical procedures such as birth control options and men's reproductive health.
